When to Aerate your Lawn?

A few inches of holes pierced into the ground provide the roots with direct access to the water, oxygen, and nutrients which fill them. After aerating, we observe explosions of healthy growth with all the components of a healthy plant. Most of this growth occurs below the surface. The turf's root system looks for holes and fills them, developing stronger, deeper roots that will bear fruit the next year.

Aeration works best when it is done when the grass is growing at its quickest rate. In most yards in the Midwest, cool-weather fescue grasses are present. For these grasses, the spring and fall are when they grow the most. Therefore, late March to April or October would be the best times to aerate your yard.
 

How do you Aerate?

Aerators come in a variety of varieties. We present the optimal solution, which is core aeration. This digs up a core of earth and grass about two to three inches deep and extracts it entirely. Other solutions, like spike aeration, just serve to push the soil to the sides, which has little long-term effect on reducing soil compaction.
